Kyle Stark - Former VP, Pittsburgh Pirates
Here are a few key takeaways from the conversation: Culture is not something you do — it’s who you are. Strong cultures are built into daily systems, habits, communication, and behaviors—not treated as a separate initiative. The “off-season” is not really off. There is the season with games and the season without games. Summer is a critical time for alignment, development, and preparation. Great coaches use this season intentionally instead of scrambling once the season begins. Staff alignment matters first. Kyle emphasized that coaches must invest time developing and aligning their staff before expecting alignment from players. Boundaries create freedom. Clear standards and non-negotiables actually create more confidence, consistency, and autonomy within a team. Coach the person, not just the player. Great coaching goes beneath performance and skill. Understanding a player’s background, values, experiences, and mindset allows coaches to lead more effectively. Culture must be connected to everything. The best coaches don’t separate culture from offense, defense, practice plans, or daily operations. Culture is woven into every part of the program. We’re grateful for your leadership and commitment to building environments where athletes and people can thrive.

Lance Brown - Vanderbilt Athletics
Here are a few key highlights: Transformative > Transactional Coaching Great coaches don’t just focus on performance, they invest in people. Players perform best when they feel seen, valued, and believed in. As coaches our words carry weight, speak life over your players. Connection Drives Performance The strongest programs (like Vanderbilt Football & Baseball) prioritize knowing their players deeply and building real relationships. Trust and connection are the foundation of high performance. We must work at building trust with our players. They live in a world where they feel like it's hard to trust anyone. Identity Matters Athletes today face pressure to tie their identity to performance. As coaches, we have the opportunity to anchor them in something deeper. Significance Over Success Winning matters, but impact lasts. The best coaches pursue significance. helping shape who their players become, not just what they accomplish. In your pursuit of significance you will find the success you're looking for. Simple takeaway: When players know you care, they respond. When they feel valued, they perform.

4 P's of Culture Building
One of the heartbeats of this call is community. Coaching can be isolating, and our hope is that this monthly space becomes a place where you feel connected, encouraged, and equipped as you lead. Here are a few key ideas we discussed on the call: Culture is not built accidentally—it requires intentional practice and consistent reinforcement. What we consistently promote has authority over what we merely think or hope. The 4 P’s of Culture give coaches a simple, repeatable framework: Practice the culture you want to see Praise what aligns with your values Promote behaviors that reflect your vision Protect the culture by addressing issues early What is tolerated today becomes tomorrow’s culture, which is why clarity must always win over comfort. Four questions to think through this month: 1. Where are we intentionally practicing our values? 2. What behaviors are we consistently praising? 3. What message are we actively promoting? 4. What standards do we need to more clearly protect? We also shared updates on the Culture Builder App, including ongoing improvements and future player access. Our encouragement to you this month: be intentional about what you promote, protect your culture with clarity and consistency, and remember that the work you’re doing matters far beyond wins and losses. Our next Culture Builder Call will be held on the Monday March 2nd at 6:30am. We’d love to continue growing together and see you there. Thank you again for investing in yourself, your team, and your culture.

Culture Builder App Latest Updates
Here are some highlights below. * The Roadmap has been replaced with an area where you can specify the particular portion of the season you are in (Off Season, Pre Season, In Season, Post Season). Now when you select the "sub season", you can then click a button that says View Plan and it will take you to a checklist activity plan to follow in the sub season you are currently in. No more guessing with the Roadmap. Just select the season, and follow the plan. * Within each sub season plan, you can click on any of the activities to get a specific explanation of that activity tailored to your culture. This is a great feature to help you execute on that activity. * When you specifically select PRE SEASON, a new section will appear that helps you teach your specific values each week. You select the Value you want to teach, the app prompts you to choose a Principle of the Week and a Culture Rep for the week. Once you choose those 2 things, a customized 5 day plan is created for you to follow. * We now have the ability for you to mark the daily lesson complete and it will take you directly to the next day. So no more guessing what value or day of teaching you are on. * Now in the green culture rep area, coaches, players, and parents will see a small gauge that shows the real time completion percentage of that culture rep. No more going to the admin panel to see it. It is right on the home screen now for not only you to see, but for players to see to help your leaders drive accountability and buy in. * Also in the green culture rep area is a bell icon that only coaches see. When you click that bell, it will send out a push notification reminder to all players about the culture rep for the week. No going to the send message screen or coming up with a message, just click it and it sends a reminder. * The message, culture rep, and just for a coach (now called For You) buttons have been removed from the home screen and placed on a bottom navigation bar that is always present. * Team Resources, Team Building, and Accountability Systems have moved to the More screen. * If you click on a value on the home screen, all of your standards, principles, and definition are still there but now there is a floating blue button on the right side that when clicked gives you teaching ideas for that specific value. * The coach admin panel has moved to the top of the More screen. As a reminder, the coach admin panel shows you all of the players, coaches, and parents that have an account, how many times they have logged in and the last time they logged in. You can also access the Culture Rep stats from the admin panel. * Before, the app was very much a toolbox approach where you had to figure out which tool to use. These changes are our attempt to not only give you a toolbox, but suggest and steer you towards the tools you should be using in a particular portion of the year.
